82-Year Old Woman With Dementia Gets Her Memory Back After Changing Her Diet

Dementia is a syndrome associated with declining of brain functioning.

– This may include problems with:

–           Memory loss

–           Mental sharpness and quickness

–           Thinking speed

–           Understanding

–           Language

–           Mood

–           Judgement

–           Difficulties carrying out daily activities

–           Movement

There are many different causes of dementia and the number of people with dementia is increasing because people are living longer.

At the moment there is no “cure” for dementia, and because it is caused by different diseases it is unlikely that there will be a single cure for it. There are medicines and other treatments that can help with dementia symptoms, but, there is not enough evidence to say whether such remedies are effective.

Recently we read a story of an 82-year-old woman who suffered from dementia to that level that she couldn’t recognize her own son. She miraculously got her memory back after changing her diet, which is interesting momentum for this disease and we want to share.

She changed her diet, which included high amounts of blueberries and walnuts. As that has proven to have had a strong impact on Sylvia’s condition her recipes are now being shared by the Alzheimer’s Society.

She also incorporated some other healthy foods, including broccoli, spinach, kale, green tea, sunflower seeds, sweet potatoes, oats, and dark chocolate with a high percentage of cocoa. You can see that all of these foods are known to be beneficial for the brain health.

Sylvia and her son Mark devised to diet together when they saw that the medication on its own was not enough. They looked into the research and found that the rates of dementia are much lower in Mediterranean countries and copied a lot of their eating habits.

When Sylvia left the hospital, instead of prescribed medication she together with Mark have started alternative treatment.

They started with a diet based on blueberries, strawberries, but included Brazil nuts and walnuts, which are seemingly shaped like a brain to give the people a sign that they are good for the brain.

Additionally, they have started some cognitive exercises, like meeting people in social situations and jigsaw puzzles crosswords. Sylvia would also exercise on a pedaling device outfitted for her chair.

Mark explained that it wasn’t an overnight miracle, but after a couple of months Sylvia began remembering things like birthdays and was becoming more alert and more engaged.

After a certain period of time, as an 82-year-old woman, she was doing very well, looking 10 years younger and there were no signs that she had gone through all of this.

The Body’s Ability to Heal Is Greater Than Anyone Has Permitted You to Believe

This story is a real example which shows how resilient our bodies really are if given the right environment. These types of diseases are often linked to diet in the first place, which is good because they can be reversed with a proper diet. Some of the diseases are genetic, but the genes can be inactive and some measures can be done to minimize the risk, such as:

–           150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week (brisk walking, cycling or dancing).

–           Do strengthening exercises twice a week, such as gardening or yoga

–           Eat a healthy and a balanced diet

–           Sit less and try to get up and move around regularly

–           If you regularly drink as much as 14 units in a week, try to spread your drinking over three or more days and have several drink-free days each week.

–           If you are obese or overweight, or even losing 5 to 10% of the excess weight can help to reduce your risk of dementia

–           If you smoke, try to quit

–           Affect your ability to be socially active and engage in mentally stimulating activities

–           Make the health check, as it can help you to spot early signs and tell you if you’re at higher risk of certain health problems. The health check can also increase your risk of dementia
